Anglesey 1939-1945
A unique exhibition – ‘Anglesey 1939-1945 : The Stories of ordinary people in extraordinary times’ will be held at Oriel Ynys Môn, Llangefni between July 3 – December 24, 2010.
For nearly 6 years between 1939-1945 Britain fought the worst war it had ever experienced. World War Two affected everyone and everything – although not all went to fight – everyone helped in the ‘war effort’ in some way or other.
A few months ago Oriel Ynys Môn asked the people of Anglesey for items they or members of their family or friends had, which portrayed life on the island during the Second World War – the result was tremendous.
“This exhibition explores all aspects of life on the island – life at home, at school, in the Land Army, the Home Guard, ARP Wardens and the evacuees that came from the cities to the island”, said Pat West, Principal Officer – Museums, Culture and Archives, Isle of Anglesey County Council.
“This exhibition could not have been possible without the help and contribution of local residents who have shared with us their wartime memories, photographs and artefacts – for which we are extremely grateful. We hope the exhibition portrays a true and poignant snapshot of a time that was not only difficult but also a period when people pulled together in time of need.”
Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Cllr Bob Parry OBE said, “This exhibition contributes to the collective memory of the lives of the people of Anglesey during a period of great conflict and uncertainty. All the information received will form an intrinsic part of our Museums and Archives Service so that future generations can learn about the vital role Anglesey played during World War Two”.
This exhibition is one which will change and grow as the months go by when new stories, information and objects will be added. For that to happen the Oriel continues with its appeal - we need you! They would like to hear from anyone with further items, photographs or stories on wartime social life, education, food, work, fashion etc to make the exhibition a success and more importantly contribute to what is remembered in this unique time in Anglesey’s history.
During the exhibition various events will take place - please follow the link on the left.
