Henllys Golf Club, Beaumaris

One island, five days, ninety holes

Anglesey may be the biggest island in the Irish Sea but some people are still surprised that we manage to pack in no fewer than nine golf courses.

Still when you’ve got 278 square miles of countryside and clifftop, not to mention breathtaking views of Snowdonia, it seems a shame not to add a few raised greens and the odd dogleg into the mix.

And while our courses might be within a Tiger Woods drive of each other, they’re all different. Eighteen-hole and nine-hole. Parkland, heathland and links.

Difficult to know where to start. Our advice is to invest in an Anglesey Golf Pass. It will cost you just £79 or, looked at another way, about the price of a single outing at a big name course in Scotland or Ireland.

But the pass allows you to play a round at no fewer than five different courses. Or the same course five times, if you prefer. Either way, you’ll probably want to make a week of it – which is why you can book a hotel at the same time as your tee slots.

Choose from the heathland courses of Holyhead or Bull Bay, the manicured parkland of Henllys at Beaumaris, bunker-free Baron Hill and the true links at Rhosneigr’s Anglesey Golf Club.

Not forgetting the latest course to join the party - Storws Wen near the beach resort of Benllech. This nine-hole gem provides views of Red Wharf Bay while you’re grappling with its tight fairways or trying to keep out of its signature water hazards.

And it offers perhaps the last word in holiday accommodation for golf nuts. Four cottages overlooking the ninth green and no more than a purposeful few strides from the first tee.
What more could you possibly want? Well, there’s Anglesey Black Beef and line-caught local sea bass on the menu in Monty’s Restaurant next door. (Named after a dog, by the way, not Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup captain).

No wonder the Anglesey Golf Pass gets more popular every year. Peter Rowen from Manchester and his mates Barry Mortimer and John Healey have just spent five happy days battling our sea breezes.

“This is a lovely island and the views from the golf courses are pretty spectacular,” says Peter. “With the A55 and the motorway links it’s an absolute dream to get down to Anglesey and the quality of the golf has been excellent.”
