A wet weekend

The famous Menai Straits Regatta returns one again this year.

Two week sailing regatta that includes a round Anglesey race, the famous race under the two bridges to Caernarfon and racing at venues including Beaumaris, Bangor, Caernarfon and Port Dinorwic.

For more information and to apply for a place in the regatta please see http://www.menaistraitregattas.org.uk

Naturally, an island like Anglesey, with a proud and significant sea-faring history, is steeped in sailing matters. Enter the beach-facing pubs and hotels and you cannot fail to notice the photographic galleries of tall ships, vessels and nautical scenes.

Listen to the conversation, politely, and you cannot avoid sea-faring chat…winds, tides, swells, catch, sightings - all extremely believable.
So it comes as no surprise that this island should produce contemporary championship yachtsmen and sailors at British, European and world competitive level.

It will not surprise you either that the island has a healthy number of sailing clubs, and harbour slipways for visiting vessels. You'll find information on maritime services and facilities provided by the council and other organisations on the Isle of Anglesey County Council website - Isle of Anglesey County Council - Maritime services.

There may be rugby and soccer fields nurturing great talents throughout Wales, but Anglesey is a different culture. You are never far from the coast, and certainly not far from the sea breeze.

There is an abundance of sailing clubs – Red Wharf Bay, Holyhead, Rhosneigr, Trearddur Bay, and two, (the Royal Anglesey and the North West Venturers Yacht Club) at Beaumaris. Give them a call or pay a visit.
