Plas Newydd

Plas Newydd on the Menai Strait

The house was built in the 18th century by renowned architect James Wyatt and commands magnificent views of Snowdonia.

In the 1930s the 6th marquess commissioned Rex Whistler to paint what was to become his largest painting. This painting can be seen in the dining room at Plas Newydd and more of Whistler's work can be viewed in the permanent exhibition devoted to him.

The 1st marquess commanded the cavalry during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. In the military museum you will see many fascinating exhibits including the first articulated wooden leg ever manufactured.

The garden at Plas Newydd is one for all seasons. In the spring you can enjoy the five acre Rhododendron Garden, accessed along a woodland walk along the banks of the Menai Strait. In the summer the terrace garden is an explosion of colour. The autumn brings golden colours and masssed hydrangeas.

Visitors can enjoy:

  • extensive gardens
  • woodland and marine walk, adventure playground and tree house
  • licensed tearoom
  • gift shop
  • connoisseur tours by prior arrangement
  • boat trips
  • events
